In March 2013, fueled by passion for a great program and desire to help others, I bet on myself, took a leap of faith, and became a small business owner. I became one of the first franchisees of the MAX Challenge, a fitness and nutrition program for the mind, body, and spirit.
This program is transformational; it changes lives, not just on the outside through regular exercise and healthy eating habits, but on the inside as well as in the mind.
The “secret sauce” is creating a culture where people feel safe, welcomed, and are surrounded by positivity and support to enable their success.
Looking back on an amazing ten years, I will tell you I don’t have a single regret, because my reward has been seeing thousands of our members live happier, healthier lives. And the examples my wife and I have set for our kids – hard work, determination, a spirit of caring for and helping others, giving back to the community, and more, are invaluable.
For the benefit of all small business owners and entrepreneurs, I want to share the most valuable reflections and lessons I’ve taken from these last ten years:
1. Follow your passion – the greater the interest and conviction you have, the more likely you are to do a better job and the more successful you are likely to be.
2. Believe in yourself – it starts there, plain and simple. If you’re not 100% willing to bet on yourself, then don’t bother starting.
3. Be data driven – this is your “truth serum” – have a sound business plan, measure your key business metrics, and make decisions based on the data.
4. Have a “customer first” mindset – this could easily be the #1 item on this list. Always be so strongly connected and appreciative of your customers, and continue to bring them value. Without customers, you don’t have a business. Period.
5. Surround yourself with positivity – it’s all about perspective and mindset. Never give your energy to negative vibes. This applies in business and in life!
6. Value relationships – for me, relationships have always been paramount. Reach out, be a mentor and strong leader to your team members, and appreciate all the connections you make, both within your business and within the community that you serve.
7. Be a “giver” – do something for others without ever expecting anything in return. It will make you feel great, and I’ll tell you, it will come back to you.
8. People make all the difference – invest in your team members; you can’t do it alone – surround yourself with like-minded people who are willing to give more than they get.
9. Be willing to do more than you think it will take – have a “no quit” and “all grit” mindset. It frequently is more than meets the eye, and you’ve got to be in it for the long haul. Getting through COVID in the health and fitness arena in New Jersey with government mandated shutdowns for over six months, then significant constraints for another nine months, is a story all unto itself!
10.Inspire and be inspired! Inspiration goes a long way; make a difference in someone’s life. And look out for those times when someone can inspire you in some way.
During this journey, I simultaneously held down a very demanding Supply Chain leadership career and helped to raise three small children. Since retiring from my corporate career in 2019, I’ve gone on to become a professional coach and consultant. This was my way to continue to grow myself and help other individuals and business owners to become better versions of themselves.
I am so passionate about making a difference in others’ lives. If you feel like I can help you or your business, click on the link and set up a free meet and greet with me!
